Beyond the Pill

Birth control pills are easy to use, convenient, and have been on the market a long time. But they’re not for everyone. Some women want hormonal birth control options that they don’t have to think about every day. Some women, such as flight attendants, have careers that make taking their Pills at the same time every day a bit difficult. Fortunately, these women have options that are just as effective as the Pill.

The Shot

One alternative to the Pill is the Depo-Provera injection. You receive four shots a year (timed to the first few days of a cycle). Depo-Provera starts working within twenty-four hours and is 99.9 percent effective. If you decide you do want a baby, you’ll have to wait a few months for your last shot to clear your system, but you will start ovulating within a year of your last dose, no matter how many doses you had before that.

Depo-Provera has a few downsides. About a third of women taking the shot will have light, irregular bleeding that can happen up to ten days per month. Some women stop menstruating completely, though many people consider this a positive side effect (you can take a pregnancy test if you want to be 100 percent sure that your periods are stopping because of the shot, and not because you’re pregnant). Depo-Provera doesn’t increase one’s risk of breast or ovarian cancer significantly. It slightly decreases your risk of endometrial cancer.
